Derivatives of the midgut include the distal half of the duodenum, the jejunum, ileum, cecum, appendix, ascending colon and proximal two-thirds of the transverse colon. These structures are supplied by the superior mesenteric artery, which also serves as the axis of midgut rotation. During week 6 of development, the midgut forms a U-shaped loop, known as the midgut loop. The midgut loop herniates into the primitive umbilical ring (protrudes outside of the abdominal cavity).
