We have mentioned that the spinal cord gives rise to 31 spinal nerves. The spinal nerves, along with the cranial nerves, are the means by which the CNS communicates with the periphery. Together, the spinal nerves and the cranial nerves are referred to as peripheral nerves. The cranial nerves take origin from the brain and will be discussed in another module. The spinal nerves take origin from the spinal cord (as we have discussed) and will be the topic for the remainder of this module. |
